On The Margins

Between society’s inhales,
And exhales,

I drown in life’s dejection,
So wanting acceptance,
So hungering acknowledgment,
So longing peace.

Yearning for someone…

To see…

To hear…

To feel…

Unlike others,
Each with beautifully flowing cursive,
Their ink rolling,
Filling the lined ledgers of the norm,
Exalting in swoops of pen stroke eloquence,
And perfect punctuation,
Their stories proclaim
Self-centered, foretold conclusions,
Bequeathed, believed grandeur.

On the margins,
I exist.

My longing words,
My aching script,
My dream-filled desires,

Never noticed…
Never honored…

These pages of life,
In your hands,
You read,

And reject,

Stultified claims
Of the expected,
Of the chattering class,
Blotched words,
Staining the pages,
Smearing the lines.

You see the truth,

The wrong,
The rawness

Of reality.

But see as well,
You do,
The margins.

You see unassuming quiet,
You see yearning to create,
You see hunger to express,
You see forgotten voices,
Forever stifled.

You see…

Unlike any other…

For you.

Just there.

On the margins.

    1. So many thanks Suzanne. It’s very, very important to me knowing that these words were impactful to you. Sometimes, I think the really important things are not jumbled together in the mix of the ordinary. We need to be circumspect, look, and listen for the other voices asking to be heard.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and support!!

      1. It’s really my pleasure Bill. It seems to me there’s a story within a story here. In your beautiful poem just as in life itself the pauses are as full with meaning as the words themselves. And you are so right that the very important things are so often quietly overlooked.

You’re so kind. I’m very happy to share them!!
