On The Other Side…

Standing alone,
Early in the morning,

The “man in the mirror” test,

Silvered glass,
Grading harshly,
This point in my life.

I long to walk backwards in time,
Passing through
That reflection before me…

But every step,
Stumbling on sadness,
My ankles, twisting,
Failure’s stones, unforgiving,
Falling forward,
Outstretched hands,
Catching my weight,
On shards of broken promises,
Cleaving edges of lost dreams…

Mythical memories of youth,
Taunting me.

Future’s doubt,
Flaunting strength.

But somehow,

From your world,
Beyond reflection pools of uncertainty,
You hear my anguish.

I feel your arms around me,
Warmth of your chest,
A balm to my back,
Gentle curves, lips murmuring,
“I love you.”
Lustrous, dark eyes,
Peering into my heart.

Your beautiful face,
In the mirror with mine.

In your visage…

I see confidence,
Where I had none.

I sense strength,
Where only I felt weakness.

I feel love,
Where only there was emptiness.

Take me there,
Draw me through this mirror,
Whisper a life together,
So desperately,
I need to hear.

Bring my heart to your world,

On the other side…

On the other side of,

The looking-glass.

      2. I am smiling…you have that power…you know.

And yes, warm now…girding for the forthcoming cold, snow, and ice.

But therein lies another opportunity to observe, capture the moment…and speak what we see…isn’t it?

        Every day…we must savor.

        Yes.

        🙂 🙂

  2. Such heart in this… I love how you see your reflection in such a harsh way, yet in the eyes of the one who loves you, they see something beautiful reflected… someone worth loving. Where we see failure and lost hope, someone else sees potential and beauty. Love how you brought out the two sides of the mirror on this poem, Bill. It just shows there is always more than one way to look at something, or someone. Well done, my friend!

    1. Oh Brandi…that was exactly my sentiment and feeling. How is it that another human being can help us see beyond the pain of our failure and moment? Maybe that “man…or woman…in the mirror” test is okay. We just need to look not only at our reflection, but what we see in the eyes of other special people. All, on the other side of the looking glass.

I hope you have a beautiful evening my friend. So grateful for your comments and thoughts.

      1. I love how you said that… “We just need to look not only at our reflection, but what we see in the eyes of other special people.”

I like to think that people can serve as mirrors, too. Some mirrors (people) are like those fun house mirrors. What they reflect to you is all distorted and doesn’t show a true reflection of who you are. I avoid those people. But, the rare ones are the people who reflect the truth of who we are. They are honest about what they see. And those are the precious ones. In this poem, you sound as if you describe the true mirror. Love can see the flaws, as well as the great parts of us, but we choose how we see ourselves in its mirror. And you conveyed that message brilliantly, Bill.

Thank you for the beautiful evening wishes, my friend. Hope you have a great night, Bill! Stay amazing!

      2. You’re right Brandi…I hadn’t thought about those fun house mirrors. That type of person would definitely distort the truth… and should be avoided. The rare, right, and truthful ones are the gems in our lives.

So thankful for you and your thoughts. Have a great day my friend!

    1. Thank you! Sometimes, I just feel like it takes someone else to look beyond our short comings…to help us see our true selves.

Richness of life is everything… yes?
