Nothing terribly unusual
For ingredients.

Unsalted butter
Bittersweet chocolate

So simple,
She thought,
Gazing at
The darkness of the chocolate,
Blackened all the more
With the piquancy of espresso,

Consummating their connection,
With the amber brilliance of the butter,

Each giving up their uniqueness
To become one
As they melted
And blended
In the warmth
Of the saucepan.

And so it was with the eggs,
Yolks separated,
Whites whipped
To a soft peak…

Each awaiting their rendezvous
With the richness of that cocoa syrup,
Altogether taking on
Yet another new life
In the heat of the oven.

And she was well
On her way
To finishing that recipe,
For flourless espresso
Chocolate cake…

Well on her way,
Until she felt him behind her,
Right there
In the kitchen…

The tautness
Of his chest,
Barely making
Its presence known
On her back.

His hips,
Just so gently,
Pressed to hers,

His right hand
Gliding down
Her outstretched right arm,
Spatula grasped,

His left hand
Caressing her left shoulder,

His cheek,
Nuzzling into
The waves of her mane,

His lips desperately
Seeking the nakedness
Of her neck.

Never before
Had she found it
So challenging
To create this,
His favorite dessert,

The rich,
So dense in its flavor,
So smooth on the tongue,

Was begging for completion.

So she fought through
The “distraction,”

Perhaps folding the whites
And chocolate syrup
Just a bit more slowly,

Each stroke taking
On its own purpose,

And unabashedly,
Her mind wandering
To the finality of it all…

A sweet,
Luscious joining,
Parts of the single,
Merged into bliss,
Unified in elegance,
Satisfying a certain craving.

So very, very special,

And without question…

    1. So…all you need to do is float of a slice of that flourless cake on some raspberry coulis….and of course, a little whipped cream on the side.

      1. I’m just sayin’ ….

Oh, and maybe a French pressed cup of strong black coffee.

Okay…stop me right now!! I’m veering off to my food world…and nothing good ever comes from that!!

  1. So sensuous and romantic that espresso cake, well I can vouch its the by far the most evocative and sinful poems of yours, without any doubt scrumptious too. I just really relished it, really decadent!

    1. Thank you Tanya!!! I’m so glad you liked it…and hopefully it upheld my part of the bargain!

I do love this simple, rich, so totally compressed cake. It rises while baking, then falls upon itself when cooling, concentrating all the richness. Floating on raspberry coulis with a dollop of semi-sweet whipped cream and strong, French pressed coffee.

      I can’t help myself!!

    1. Thanks Jamie!!

I actually started a novel… but can’t seem to find the time… so I’ve settled for writing these free verse snippets.

      Still satisfying nonetheless…

We just have to put words down,
      don’t we?

      In some form, or fashion.

      Thanks for your support!!!

      1. It would be totally cool… and completely achievable! You can do it!!

I’ve got a detailed novel outline complete, but I’m faced with the damnable decision of what to do with scant free time. And for now, writing poetry provides the release, with the more flexible commitment of time.

But someday my friend, that novel will come to life!!!
