…So Desperately Wants To Try

I accept that
There are
A million reasons
Why I’m
Not right for you.

There are a million
Miles separating us.

There are countless
Complexities that
Would ensue.

There are untold
Changes that
Would demand
Our attention.

Simply too

To accept,

And in which
To invest your life.

I understand
All of this…

All of this reality,
Bringing me
To my knees,

And leaving you,
To move on.

I know I can’t
Make you change
Your mind.

I know I can’t
Get you to see
That the panoply
Of color and light
Before us,
Is not our sunset…

But our sunrise.

I know I can’t
Convince you
To give us another chance.

I know I can’t
Make you
Love me again,

But my heart…

So desperately
Wants to try.

  1. Beautiful as always, Bill. I love how you express the dissociation between the rational self, or what the mind tells you, those words that keep echoing: “move on!”, and the heart’s complete refusal. This is a poem for those people living in eternal infatuation, very relatable to so many of us. Loved it!

    1. I’m so happy that you liked it Marta, and thank you for the very kind comments! Not really sure why the words come out the way they do…I just write what’s on my mind…nuanced by the heart. Hope you have a very nice day!
