It Wasn’t The Text Message…

Just now,
And regrettably…

I got your text message.

I need to take that back.
That’s not the way
I really feel.

The truth is
That I just received
The greatest,
Bittersweet gift,
I could ever imagine.

So many years have passed.

So many missed opportunities,
Authoring a story of what
Might have been…

What could have been…

Had you,
And I,

Taken a path together,

Fulfilling a certain destiny

But that was not our fate,
Nor future.

We clutched

For decades,

To a memory,
To an ember,
To a taste,
Of a wistful dream.

So here I sit,

It wasn’t the text message you sent me…

It was your was heart,
It was your body,
It was your essence,
And whisper of what could have been.

It wasn’t the text message that ripped
My heart from the mundane,
Throwing me into another world,
That would never exist.

It was you.
