My Vows

This day…

You…
And I…

Have dreamed of,
And wished for…

This day,
Is here.

Standing before one another,
Your hands in mine,
All I can see is your strikingly beautiful eyes,
And smile,

Everything else…
Is a blur.

If I can only remember my vows,
The words the Pastor provided,
The words we practiced,
The words required.

But in this moment,
Other thoughts come to mind.

Beyond taking you,
This woman,
As my lawfully wedded wife…

Here’s what’s on my mind…

Here are the words,
Burning in my heart,
Now,

Here are my true vows…

When you’re 28,
I’ll gaze at you,
As I did on that first date,
When 16 seemed so old,
For both of us.

When you’re 38,
I’ll gaze at you,
With honor,
And respect,
Knowing that still,
That there is no other for me.

When you’re 48,
I’ll gaze at you,
With undiminished hunger,
Still longing for your touch,
And for your sex.

And when you’re 58,
I’ll gaze at you,
As I did on that first date,
When 16 seemed so old,
For both of us.

And when you’re 68,
I’ll gaze at you
With undiminished hunger,
Still longing for your touch,
And your sex.

And when your 78,
And 88,
And 98…

I’ll still be thinking of all the above,
And that day,
When we held hands,
Before that altar,
And all our friends,
And our God…

Professing to you,

My vows.
